ROAD TO
GYMKHANA

SUBARU OF AMERICA /
FORMULA PHOTOGRAPHIC

  • After 9 years, nearly 200 episodes, 700 videos, 150 million views and counting over all the platforms, The Subaru Motorsports team finally accomplished what they set out to do: Win the top titles in both the American Rally and Rallycross championships. Through that time, Launch Control stayed fairly true to its origins, a branded docu-series with a narrator and largely unchanged look and feel. When the team's mission was complete, Subaru of America didn’t want to stop there.

The outcome of a long strategy development process and creative rework was the evolution of the Launch Control brand as a whole. Launch Control used to be a show…now it would become a Master Brand. Under the Launch Control umbrella, 3 tiers emerged. High quality event coverage would be fast tracked and released within 10 days of the event, titled Rally Rundowns. There would be a mini-series component that would bring the “Next Stage” documentary to light. And finally, there would be “Special Edition” segments that would allow one off events and special projects to shine on their own.

Road to Gymkhana would become the shining light in the re-brand, offering a new look at what goes into making the iconic Gymkhana videos. This trailer outlines some of what can be found in this 3-part Special Edition series.

PINK BIKE ACADEMY

BOOMBOX GROUP

  • In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, one of our long-term clients asked if we could assist them in the editing of a reality TV show they were producing. We agreed to budgets and remote editing, and we began editing Episode 5 of the first season of The Pinkbike Academy. The process was far more swift and efficient than they were expecting. Boombox, the production company on the project, asked if we could also edit Episode 6…then Episode 9. When the season finished, a post season review took place and Bowes Media was asked to become the Post Production partner on the project moving forward.

In 2021, Bowes Media edited all 10 episodes of the second season. We offered a turn-key solution that Boombox could trust. We also offered creative leads, production direction,
and management, so that the Boombox team could focus on the review process, its sponsors, and the ultimate branding of the series.

In 2022, Pinkbike the website was purchased by Outside. The ensuing months would see the PBA project change once again. With Outside’s input, the series looked to grow beyond the world of enduro. Bowes Media was once again locked in as post-production partner, and delivered ten more exciting episodes.

SUBARU LAUNCH CONTROL

SUBARU OF AMERICA /
FORMULA PHOTOGRAPHIC

  • In 2013, Subaru Launch Control began as a way connecting Subaru of America with their fans. As the team built upon its success in rally to pursue the winning formula in Rallycross, the team was bound to have ups and downs. The concept that we, the video creators, put forth was that “it doesn’t take race wins to win fans.” From there, we began.

The following years would have the expected highs and lows, but the journey to rallycross domination bolstered the fan base. Internally, the series would prove to be a unifying force, offering those within Subaru of America who did not entirely understand the rally and rallycross program a way to follow along and become fans themselves.

It took nine years for the team to reach its goal of winning both rally and rallycross championships, but those nine years would see the Subaru Motorsports USA team become the fan favorite at every race they attended. The fans knew the inner workings of the team because they had been watching.

In 2022, the series was transformed from a Web Series to a Master Brand. Launch Control now comprises three lanes: The Rally Rundown series, which offers quick turnaround race event coverage; Special Editions, which offer unique doc style behind-the-scenes edits such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Road to Gymkhana, and more; And thirdly, The Mini-Series lane provides deep dives into the inner workings of the team, highlighted by the first offering in this area entitled “Next Stage,” a six-part series following the making of a top level rally car in a way never before shown.

As the series evolves and the goals change, Launch Control remains a key access point between the team and its fans. As social media builds its base, social offerings offer short glimpses, while Launch Control is there for the hard-core fans that want all the story beyond a 15-second post.

iGO ELECTRIC

  • In 2019, Bowes Media began working with iGO electric, a budding electric bike manufacturer in the heart of Montreal. The goal was to offer them high quality imagery and video assets without agency complications. Today, Bowes Media offers iGO the benefits of an in-house video department without the full time overhead. From “how to assemble your iGO” bike, to product highlight videos, to lifestyle hype reels, Bowes Media remains a key part of the iGO marketing eco-system.

CANADIAN RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

THE CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF RALLYSPORT / SUBARU CANADA

  • In 2014, Bowes Media and Formula Photographic were brought in as the official media partners for the Canadian Association of RallySport’s National Rally Championship. Our mission was to modernize the deliverables in order to better serve the Canadian Rally Championship, along with its sponsors. The main focus remained a national TV broadcast, produced in two languages for distribution on TSN and RDS. But the project was larger than a simple broadcast. In our first two years, we worked with key partners of the series to help structure a competitor-focused website, social media deliverables, live streaming, and more. Today, the CRC TV show remains the centre point of the sponsorship packages, but those same sponsors see immense value in the online deliverables. For these reasons, Subaru Canada remains the presenting sponsor of the Championship, continuing the faith they’ve maintained in the series for three decades.

While the display of rally, a sport that takes place in the deep woods out of sight from most of its fans, remains challenging, the CRC boasts visibility numbers in the millions across its broadcast contracts, social platforms, event-related promotions, and its fans. We are proud of the visibility we’ve been able to achieve over the past decade in this series, and look forward to growing it further.
